Why Walking May Be the Most Underrated Fitness Habit

By Juthika Gupta, Fitness Coach at FITTR

The Fitness Habit That Starts With One Step

In a world obsessed with intense workouts, heavy lifting and dramatic transformations, I believe one of the simplest fitness tools deserves far more attention: walking.

As a fitness coach, I often remind people that fitness isn’t limited to the hour they spend exercising. What we do during the remaining hours of the day matters too.

Walking is accessible, sustainable and remarkably easy to incorporate into everyday life. Whether it is a morning walk, taking the stairs, walking during a work break or simply choosing to move instead of sitting, every step contributes to a more active lifestyle.

My message is simple:

Don’t underestimate the power of walking. Start where you are. Move a little more every day. Stay consistent.

10,000 Steps: A Goal, Not a Rule

The familiar 10,000-step target has become almost synonymous with daily fitness. For many people, it can be a useful motivational benchmark, but it shouldn’t become a source of guilt.

If you’re currently averaging 3,000 or 4,000 steps, jumping immediately to 10,000 may feel unrealistic.

Start With Your Current Baseline

Instead, begin by understanding how much you already move.

Then ask yourself:

  • Can I add another 1,000 steps?
  • Can I take a short walk after meals?
  • Can I stand up and move more frequently during the workday?
  • Can I choose the stairs for a few floors?
  • Can I walk while taking a phone call?

Small decisions accumulate.

Consistency Beats Extremes

The most effective fitness routine isn’t necessarily the most exhausting one. It is the one you can continue.

Walking can become part of everyday life rather than another task on an already crowded schedule.

That is where its real strength lies.

Fitness Doesn’t End When the Workout Ends

Your Daily Movement Matters

A structured workout is valuable, but the rest of your day shouldn’t be spent sitting continuously.

This is one of the principles I emphasize as a coach: exercise and everyday movement complement each other.

A 45-minute workout followed by hours of inactivity is very different from combining structured exercise with regular movement throughout the day.

Walking gives people an opportunity to make movement part of their lifestyle.

More Movement, Less Sedentary Time

Walking can help you break up long periods of sitting and increase your overall daily activity.

It can also contribute to energy expenditure while supporting cardiovascular fitness and an active lifestyle.

The objective isn’t to chase a number obsessively.

The objective is to build a life in which movement feels normal.

Juthika Gupta’s Fitness Philosophy

My approach to fitness is built around sustainability rather than quick fixes.

I believe fitness should fit into real life—not require you to put your entire life on hold.

Move More. Live Better.

Fitness can mean strength training, mobility work, cardiovascular exercise, nutrition, recovery and, importantly, the movement we accumulate outside the gym.

Walking represents that philosophy beautifully.

You don’t need expensive equipment.

You don’t need a complicated program.

You simply need to begin.

Progress Is Personal

One person’s 10,000 steps may be another person’s starting point.

Your fitness journey should be measured against your own previous level, not somebody else’s highlight reel.

If yesterday you walked 4,000 steps and today you walked 5,000, that is progress.

If you have been inactive and took your first 15-minute walk today, that matters too.

The Juthika Gupta Approach: Make Movement a Lifestyle

As a fitness coach at FITTR, I want people to understand that sustainable fitness isn’t about doing everything perfectly.

It is about making better choices consistently.

A walk can become:

A morning ritual.
A chance to clear your mind and start the day actively.

A workday reset.
A short movement break between long periods of sitting.

A post-meal habit.
A simple way to incorporate more movement into your routine.

A family activity.
An opportunity to spend time together while staying active.

A personal commitment.
A daily reminder that your health deserves attention.

Beyond the Number on the Step Counter

Don’t Let 10,000 Become a Punishment

Step counters can motivate us, but they should never make us feel like we have failed simply because we didn’t reach an arbitrary number.

Some days will be busy.

Some days will be exhausting.

Some days your body may need more recovery.

Fitness is not one perfect day. It is the pattern you create over weeks, months and years.

Find Your Sustainable Rhythm

The goal is to discover an activity level that works with your lifestyle.

Start small.

Build gradually.

Stay consistent.

And when your routine becomes easier, challenge yourself again.

Why I Keep Talking About Walking

As a coach, I don’t want fitness to be perceived as something that happens only inside a gym.

I want people to look at their entire day differently.

Walk more.

Sit less.

Take movement breaks.

Choose active options when possible.

Train with purpose.

Eat well.

Recover properly.

And most importantly, create habits that you can sustain.

Because fitness isn’t just about your workout. It’s about how you live between your workouts.

A Message From Juthika

If you’re waiting for the perfect time to start your fitness journey, don’t.

You don’t need to begin with 10,000 steps.

You don’t need to run a marathon.

You don’t need to transform your life overnight.

Start where you are. Take one step. Then another.

Your journey doesn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

Sometimes, transformation begins with something as simple as putting on your shoes and walking out the door. 🚶‍♀️💪
