The Secret to Happiness Lies Within You: A Journey to Self-Worth and Self-Love
By Vatsala
A recent conversation reminded me of a beautiful story from my younger days, one that transformed the way I see myself.
There was a time when I constantly doubted myself, always seeking validation from others, even when I knew I was doing everything right. That was until I encountered an old sage by the banks of the Ganges. Every morning, I would see him there—sometimes building towers out of pebbles, other times feeding fish, playing with the river waves, or simply gazing at the water. His appearance changed daily, but one thing remained constant: his twinkling eyes and the wide smile beneath his silver beard.
Each day, I waved at him, and one day, I couldn’t resist asking, “How are you always so happy? What’s the secret to happiness?”
The old sage smiled and said, “The secret to happiness is to love yourself, believe in yourself, and know your worth.”
Perplexed, I asked, “But how do I do that?”
He smiled again and explained, “You do it by being kind to yourself, believing in yourself even when no one else does, and knowing that you are valuable and deserving of love and respect. Accept who you are and strive each day to be a better version of yourself. Look at yourself with appreciation, both inside and out.”
That day, I realized the secret to happiness had always been within me. From then on, I treated myself with kindness and compassion, and my self-belief grew tremendously. I no longer felt insecure or sought validation from others.
Remember, you are unique, and that is what makes you special.
Self-worth, self-love, and self-esteem are all deeply connected to how we perceive ourselves:
👉 Self-worth is the belief that we are valuable, deserving of love and respect, regardless of external circumstances. It’s about believing in our intrinsic value.
👉 Self-love is about caring for ourselves, treating ourselves with kindness, and accepting ourselves with all our strengths and flaws. It’s recognizing our worth.
👉 Self-esteem reflects how we think and feel about ourselves, influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors.
Improving self-worth, self-love, and self-esteem requires nurturing ourselves with love, care, and compassion. It takes patience and effort but is worth every step.
