Seeking Help: A Sign of Strength, Not Weakness

By Vatsala , Mental Wellbeing Coach

In my journey as a mental wellbeing coach, I have encountered numerous individuals who struggle with the notion that asking for help is a sign of weakness. This misconception, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, it takes an incredible amount of strength and courage to reach out for support when needed.

My Own Struggles

Even as a coach who guides others in mental wellness, I, too, have faced similar hesitations. I once believed that with my knowledge and self-awareness, I could manage everything on my own. But life has a way of humbling us all, and there are moments when even the strongest need guidance. Seeking help doesn’t make us weaker—it allows us to confront our vulnerabilities and grow stronger from them.

Breaking the Stigma

Mental health still carries a heavy stigma. We often hear phrases like “toughen up” or “be strong,” but I’ve come to realize that true strength lies in recognizing when we need help. Strength can be redefined by embracing the following:

1. Recognizing limitations:

Understanding that no one can do everything on their own.

2. Embracing vulnerability:

Being open to feeling and expressing emotions without shame.

3. Seeking help:

Acknowledging when it’s time to reach out.

4. Practicing self-compassion:

Treating yourself with kindness and understanding.

5. Embracing growth:

Using support to become a better, healthier version of yourself.

My Journey, Your Journey

As someone who has walked this path, I can confidently say that seeking help is not only necessary but also empowering. It takes resilience to admit that we cannot carry the weight alone, and immense courage to ask for assistance.

If you are facing difficulties, know that you are not alone. Seeking help is a profound act of strength and a crucial step towards healing.

Take the First Step

Don’t hesitate to reach out. Whether it’s to a trusted friend, family member, or a mental health professional, seeking help is the first step towards positive change. Acceptance is the gateway to healing.

Let’s break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage one another to seek support when needed. Healing is a journey, and it’s okay to ask for directions along the way.
