“Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend… clearly never had muscles.”
This quote may sound bold, but it holds a powerful truth. In a world that often associates beauty with sparkle and shine, muscles bring a different kind of glow—one born from discipline, resilience, and inner strength. While diamonds are symbols of luxury, muscles are symbols of personal growth. And in today’s fast-paced, high-pressure life, the latter has become not just desirable, but essential.
In this article, we’ll explore why building muscle is crucial for women, the scientific and emotional benefits, and how muscle mass impacts long-term health, identity, and confidence—especially as we age.
Diamonds may dazzle, but muscles push you out of bed when your body is sore and your spirit is tired. They don’t just support your body during a heavy squat or deadlift, but also:
According to several clinical studies, resistance training has a direct correlation with improved mental well-being. This makes strength training not just a physical practice but a psychological one.
“Muscles don’t just help you lift weights—they lift your spirit.”
When you engage in strength training, your body experiences muscle hypertrophy, where muscle fibers break down and rebuild stronger. This adaptation process:
Building muscle isn’t about becoming bulky—it’s about becoming functionally strong and metabolically healthier. For women over 40, this is crucial. Muscle loss (sarcopenia) begins as early as your 30s, and without resistance training, you can lose up to 5–8% of muscle mass every decade.
Muscles aren’t about vanity. They’re not just built for mirror selfies or “before-after” pictures. They’re built to carry groceries, climb stairs, play with your kids, or recover from injury. They’re built for real life.
As I often tell my clients:
“Don’t build muscles for compliments. Build them for courage. For clarity. For identity.”
When you train regularly and nourish your body with the right macronutrients, you start experiencing a shift in mindset. You don’t work out to get approval—you train to feel unstoppable.
Life throws challenges—emotional breakdowns, stress, career burnout, health scares. In these moments, what keeps you from falling apart is often the discipline and structure you’ve built through your fitness journey.
Muscle memory isn’t just physical—it’s emotional.
When life feels chaotic, the simple routine of one walk, one rep, one healthy meal helps restore a sense of control. You learn to show up for yourself even when you don’t feel like it. This is the core of emotional resilience.
Let’s break it down:
Attribute | Diamonds | Muscles |
---|---|---|
Cost | Financial | Effort, Time, Patience |
Value | External (status/luxury) | Internal (health/strength) |
Durability | Lifetime accessory | Lifelong protection |
Return on Investment | Emotional attachment | Physical, mental, emotional well-being |
Who gives them to you? | Someone else | YOU, through work and consistency |
While diamonds are gifts, muscles are earned. And that makes them priceless.
At age 47, I can say confidently—I’m in the best shape of my life, physically and mentally. And it’s not because of crash diets or shortcuts. It’s because I embraced strength training, consistent movement, and smart nutrition.
Here’s why it matters more as we age:
Whether you’re in your 20s, 30s, or late 40s like me—it’s never too late to start.
If you’re new to muscle training, here’s what I recommend:
Squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks are a great foundation.
Gradually increase weights or resistance. Your muscles need challenge to grow.
Protein intake is critical. Aim for 1.2–2.0 g/kg of body weight depending on your goals.
It’s not about perfection—it’s about showing up daily.
Guidance from a certified coach helps avoid injury and keeps you accountable.
At some point, we all stop waiting to be rescued.
That’s when we realize that strength isn’t about lifting the heaviest barbell—it’s about lifting ourselves out of self-doubt, out of excuses, and into the life we truly want.
Build muscles, not for the mirror—but for the battles no one sees you fighting.
Because when life gets heavy, you’ll be glad you’re stronger than diamonds.
Cheers to strong women.
Cheers to self-made muscles.
Cheers to you.
