Think Breathing is Too Basic to Matter? Think Again!

Written by Ms. Smita Bhatnagar, Fittr Coach

What could be more basic than breathing? It’s something we do effortlessly, day in and day out, often without a second thought. However, when it comes to exercising, many of us unknowingly make crucial mistakes in how we breathe, impacting our overall performance. Yes, breathing may seem basic, but it is one of the most powerful and often overlooked tools for an impactful workout.

In this article, we will explore how mastering proper breathing techniques can supercharge your fitness routine and lead to better results.

Eccentric & Concentric Breathing

Think of your workout as a rhythm that flows with your breath. Proper breathing during exercise involves exhaling (breathing out) during the hardest part of the movement, like pushing a dumbbell overhead or pulling yourself up on a bar. Conversely, you inhale (breathe in) during the easier phase, such as lowering the weight or coming back down. This breathing rhythm synchronizes your muscles and lungs, allowing your movements to be smoother and more efficient, like a finely tuned machine.

For example:
Exhale when you push, lift, or pull.
– Inhale as you lower, relax, or return to the starting position.

This simple but effective method can make a significant difference in how your body performs during workouts.

The Valsalva Maneuver: For Heavy Lifting

When you’re lifting heavy weights—think deadlifts or squats—breathing plays an even bigger role. One advanced technique is the Valsalva maneuver. Here’s how it works: before lifting, take a deep breath, brace your core as if you’re preparing for impact, and hold your breath momentarily as you lift. This maneuver creates internal pressure, stabilizing your spine and giving you more power to handle heavy loads.

However, remember not to hold your breath for too long—release it right after completing the hardest part of the lift. It’s a fantastic technique when used properly but should be done with care.

Why Does Breathing Matter During Workouts?

Mastering your breath offers several significant benefits during exercise:

– Prevents dizziness and fatigue: Proper oxygen flow keeps you energized and focused.
– Improves muscle control and focus: Synchronizing your breathing with your movements allows better mind-muscle connection.
– Reduces the risk of injury: Controlled breathing stabilizes your core and protects your lower back, especially during heavy lifts.
– Helps break through weight plateaus: Struggling to lift the same weight for weeks? Proper breathing can give you the extra power to push through.

Conclusion: Your Breath is Your Power

The next time you’re in the gym, remember that breathing is not just an automatic action—it’s a tool that can maximize your workout results. Exhale with force during challenging phases, inhale deeply and purposefully during the easier parts, and let your breath guide every movement.

Trust me—you’ll feel the difference.

Take a deep breath… Now, are you ready to crush your next workout?

Let’s go! 💪
