NEW DELHI/LONDON — Advantech is strengthening its edge-AI computing portfolio by integrating Intel’s latest Core Ultra Series 3 processors, manufactured using Intel’s advanced 18A process technology, into a new generation of industrial computing platforms.
The company has announced the adoption of the processors across several products, including the MIO-5381 and AIMB-234 motherboards, SOM-5886 system-on-module and ARK-2252 edge computer.
According to Advantech, the new platforms are designed to bring substantial AI processing capabilities closer to where data is generated, reducing reliance on centralized cloud infrastructure for demanding industrial workloads.
At the heart of the new platforms are Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, which can provide up to 180 platform TOPS of AI acceleration.
The combination of CPU, GPU and NPU capabilities is aimed at applications that require real-time processing. These include industrial inspection, predictive maintenance, intelligent monitoring and computer-vision systems.
For industries handling large amounts of visual information, edge processing can be particularly important. Instead of continuously sending high-resolution video to a remote data center, AI models can analyze information locally and respond immediately.
Advantech says the MIO-5381 and AIMB-234 platforms combine GPU and NPU resources to support real-time AI inference, including applications such as analyzing endoscopic video streams.
The technology also targets industrial vision applications such as automated optical inspection (AOI), three-dimensional inspection and AI-based defect detection.
Running these workloads directly on an edge system can help manufacturers identify defects and anomalies without introducing the latency associated with remote processing.
The Core Ultra Series 3 processors also incorporate Intel Arc GPUs with up to 12 Xe cores.
Advantech highlights graphics performance improvements of up to 50% compared with previous-generation processors, potentially making the platforms suitable for demanding graphics and AI-vision workloads.
Applications can include high-resolution human-machine interfaces, 3D inspection systems and deep-learning-based AOI.
One notable advantage is the ability to handle these workloads on a single system-on-chip platform, potentially reducing the need for a separate discrete GPU in some deployments.
Beyond machine vision, Advantech is positioning the new hardware for intelligent automation and critical industrial environments.
The SOM-5886 provides a scalable computing option for embedded-system designers, while the ARK-2252 is intended for edge-computing deployments where ruggedized and scalable computing capabilities are important.
Potential applications span factory automation, equipment monitoring, predictive maintenance and other industrial AI workloads.
The move reflects a wider industry shift toward processing artificial intelligence workloads at the edge rather than depending exclusively on centralized cloud computing.
Local AI processing can offer several advantages, including faster response times, reduced data-transfer requirements and greater control over sensitive operational information.
For industrial organizations, these capabilities can be particularly valuable when decisions must be made in milliseconds or when network connectivity cannot be guaranteed.
Advantech’s hardware can also be combined with the company’s EdgeAI SDK, providing software tools intended to simplify AI deployment.
The platform includes GenAI Studio, which supports the development and customization of large language model-based applications. Advantech is also highlighting its Orchestration Platform, designed to assist organizations with managing and updating fleets of edge devices.
This combination of hardware acceleration and software management could become increasingly important as companies deploy AI across hundreds or thousands of industrial endpoints.
Advantech’s adoption of Intel’s 18A-based Core Ultra Series 3 processors signals the growing importance of high-performance, energy-conscious computing at the edge.
As manufacturers and other industries move from experimental AI projects toward large-scale deployment, demand is increasing for platforms capable of handling AI inference, computer vision, automation and generative AI locally.
